The Rotterdam Municipal Public Health Service

 

is a public health body as a branch of the local government. It is an organisation with civil servants working on prevention, intervention, coordination, research and policy on health issues in an area of 800.000 inhabitants. One of its responsibilities is the access to cure and care for undocumented migrants. The population of Rotterdam is divers with large groups from Suriname, Turkey, Morocco and Cab Verde.

 

Activities:

·        Migrant education:  Foreign educators (e.g. Moroccan) offer women and men from their own culture and in their own language information about health and the raise of children.

·        Safety net and advice: The Gemeentelijke Gezondheidsdienst Rotterdam offers socio-medical aid to people on the fringes of society and homeless people.

·        Support Point Child Care: This office is a service-rendering agency for anyone who has to do with day nursery: entrepreneurs, infant school teachers, municipalities, the city government and municipal services and parents. It offers advice, conducts research, organises all sorts of schooling activities and develops new policy.

·        Public mental health:  The Gemeentelijke Gezondheidsdienst Rotterdam is responsible for public mental health care in Rotterdam and the surrounding municipalities. In addition, the department is responsible for all managerial aspects, organisations active in the field of mental health care. The center offers on request and in consultation various programmes aimed at (chronic) psychiatric patients, addicts, prostitutes and undocumented migrants.

·        Rotterdam Youth Monitor: The Rotterdam Youth Monitor allows the Gemeentelijke Gezondheidsdienst Rotterdam more insight into the health situation of young people.

·        Mapping health: The Gemeentelijke Gezondheidsdienst Rotterdam draws up a health chart, which offers an overview of the most important developments in the field of health and health care. In this way, the municipal council has an indication of the health situation of the population of Rotterdam.
