The aim of this study is  to review methodologies that have been, or are currently being, used in different countries within and beyond Europe to estimate the stock of illegally resident persons, followed by an assessment of their applicability to the UK situation.

Overall a review has been made of 28 studies in 15 countries. Countries include the US, Italy, The Netherlands, France, Greece, Portugal, Germany, Spain, Czech Republic, Morocco, Tunisia, Switzerland, Belgium, Costa Rica and South Africa.

None of the methods gives results with which the authors are fully confident, and several of them are according to the authors little more than speculative.
