Intro

In many countries in Europe, undocumented migrants live in a situation of marginalization. As they do not possess a legal residence permit, they often are excluded from basic social services that help to meet a decent standard of living (e.g. shelter, food, clothing and health care, as well as legal advice, education and training).

Aims of the project

Many citizens and civil organisations provide humanitarian support to undocumented migrants. The "Book of Solidarity" project aims at highlighting the manifold ways solidarity is extended to undocumented migrants in Europe. PICUM wishes to analyze these initiatives to help organizations to further deepen their work, and also to prevent humanitarian support for undocumented migrants from being discouraged, forbidden or penalized.

Implementation

The project was carried out in three phases, focusing on different geographical regions in Europe:

Phase 1: Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, the United Kingdom
Phase 2: France, Spain, Italy
Phase 3: Austria, Denmark, Sweden

During each phase, workshops were held in the various countries for experts and representatives of NGOs to exchange experiences and good practices.

The concrete result of the project is the Book of Solidarity: Providing Assistance to Undocumented Migrants, Volumes I-III, an overview of the legal and ethical context in which organizations in these countries provide assistance to undocumented migrants.
